Canfranc Station

A symbol of Spain’s international connections, the building of Canfranc Station survives the abandonment of its facilities since routes on the other side of the Pyrenees were suspended.

It is a remarkably large station, 241 metres long, with 75 doors on each of its sides. The modernismo (Spanish Art Nouveau) which was in full swing in the early 20th century is reflected in the materials chosen in this rail station, made of concrete, stone, iron and glass, and a slate roof.

Like a French 19th century palace, Canfranc Station required a great deal of engineering to avoid snow avalanches. Opened in 1928, it closed its doors when France suspended the line when a train derailed in 1970.
